    BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE (INTELIGENCIA EMPRESARIAL)

    Presentation:

    This course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills on specific aspects to successfully manage technology and solutions available for playing with industrial data. Business intelligence is closely related to data warehousing. This section discusses business intelligence, as well as the relationship between business intelligence and data warehousing. 

    In this course, students will learn about framework for BI and required components. Also they will become aware of other tools and technology required. Additionally, during the second part of the course datasets will be provided as a sample in order that students can play effectively with data in a ‘learning by doing’ paradigm. 

    This course will cover specifically following topics: 

    - Business intelligence concepts. 
    - Data warehouse issues. 
    - Datamining solutions.

    Learning Outcomes:

    This course is intended:

    - To understand data more quickly to make better, faster decisions and contribute towards fulfilling business objectives.

    - To know the internal and external requirements for Business Intelligence (BI)

    - To use the best technical practices for supporting BI: The web, data warehousing and information integration.

    - To show how to use data for multiple purposes including presenting your organisation's performance to stakeholders.

    - To gain a valuable insight into key operating information to quickly identify business problems and opportunities.

    - To practice with an open-source tool in a case study application of tools and methods, looking for new knowledge.

    The lessons of the course may be split into groups as follows:

    Theoretical knowledge gathering

    1. INTRODUCTION TO BUSSINESS INTELLIGENCE

    2. DATA, INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE

    3. DATA WAREHOUSE

    4. DATA MINING

    5. BI TOOLS Practical application to case studies

    6. CASE STUDY SELECTION. ETL WORK

    7. CASE MODELLING AND ANALYSIS (wrap 4 weeks)

    8. SOME OTHER CASE STUDIES

    Course contents:

    There is different level of learning objectives involved in present course:

    Regarding the cognitive domain, and with emphasis in knowledge and analysis it is expected that students can

    - Acquire basic concepts about business intelligence, data warehouse and data mining.

    - Formulate applications related to these technologies into their specific field of activity, being able to distinguish different domains of application.

    - Analyze and organize BI tools comparison regarding an specific field of application.

    Regarding the cognitive domain but with emphasis into the application domain, it is expected that students can:

    - Install an open-source data mining toolbox by themselves.

    - Apply analysis strategies to provided datasets by using previous installed toolbox.

    - Write a summary of main findings produced during the experience.

    Finally, by sharing doubts and problems into the forum provided for discussion, students will improve the affective dimension of learning experience as well as the teamwork experience.

    Course Methodology:

    - On-line discussion and debate: Participants will discuss and debate on-line a case that will be used throughout the program. This will clearly establish the need for a a complete marketing tool kit.

    - Individual Study: The text book and first hand experiences will be used to present marketing tools and methodologies that address the issues from the case and identified by program participants.

    - Practice: Practice with tools and methodologies, applying them to the case and presenting their application for debate and discussion will build confidence and know-how of each participant.

    - The study materials will be based on several chapters from “The Next Wave of Technologies: Opportunities from Chaos” by Phil Simon.

    ASSESSMENT:

    Revision exercises: The revision exercises are designed to allow students to self-assess their own learning progress at the beginning of each unit.

    Control Tests: A control test is designed to grade students in the middle of their learning process and can act as a guide for the final exam.

    Practice tests

    Non-distant final exam. The final paper lasts for one hour at the end of the term. Students are allowed to use study materials during this exam. There are two possible exams per course. A grade of Pass is required to obtain the corresponding credits of each course.
